about Geoffrey Shakespeare

Geoffrey Shakespeare was born on 23 September, 1893. The outbreak of war in 1914 had interrupted his natural sciences degree at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. At the time of the Gallipoli campaign he was 22 years old.

The two Territorial Force, ‘Saturday night soldiers’, the 1/4th and 1/5th battalions were both part of the Norfolk and Suffolk Brigade, part of the East Anglian Division. In May 1915 these became the 163rd (Norfolk and Suffolk) Brigade, 54th (East Anglian) Division. The two territorial battalions both served in the Gallipoli Campaign in mid-1915, arriving on August 10th.
