Orders to leave. Nearly left behind but for man RRP sent.
Padded about on ‘Sir Joseph’, some ship or
other.
At last Captain found Khedivial mail boat,
Cokinira, on which we stayed all day.
Sailed at 4. Saw last of Lemnos about 6, with Olympic
funnels against the sunset, RRP says “sneering at submarines”.
Billie and I sat ‘forard’ and discussed the
happiest days we had spnt. The average
so high, rather difficult to choose.
Lights out at 730. Arrive about 9. RRP asks Captain: “How long have we got?”
“Not prophetically, I hope, 10 minutes,” is
the reply.
We approach Peninsula which is a dark line
of cliff with twinkling lights. Very
like Brighton.
Waited off land till 10, under rifle
fire. Then taken ashore on lighter at
Anzac.
Here we are to go 300 yard in.
Proceeded to march carrying loaded pack,
haversack, 2 pistols, 2 water bottles, compass.
Time 11.
At 12.
Thought they had a different conception of yards to what I had.
One o’clock: halted for 10 minutes and
slept soundly.
On again and came to destination at one
thirty o’clock.
Informed we are half way.
Woke up and started again. Apparently going a trip round Turkey on foot.
2 o’clock: came to Headquarters of
Division.
RRP went off 4th Norfolks.
So sleepy hardly felt it.
Hear Norfolks are in firing line.
3 o’clock.
Still going strong. No nearer
Norfolk lines than last Xmas but apparently near firing line by the bullets
whizzing overhead.
Here at last, only wrong place.
3rd Bedfords. Cheers!
Arrive at 4 at Headquarters of 10th
Londons.
Norfolks returning from trench at 6.
Slept soundly on the ground.
Landing at Suvla Bay
