Colonel came over and shell fire near. At once ordered 10 men to double out of
dugouts and take cover. 5 secs after
they were cleared out a shell burst right amongst where they had been. At least 6 lives saved. Man 5 yds suddenly jumped up and fell in a
hole. Bullet right through upper thigh,
another lower leg. Couldn’t go near him
and he lay groaning 10 minutes after wound was dressed. Quite unnerved me.
Same night took 7 men down to Bedford advanced
post. Arrived 10 to 6pm. Australians try
to strafe Green Hill at 6. Splendid
fireworks display. Bullets whistling all
round. Bombs thrown by Turks reply. 6 men told to keep touch with me. Kept rustling bushes 30 yards off. Sgt thought they were Turks so crept out and
lay with pistol in hand behind bush and watched them for ½ an hour.
Anyhow I should have been warned. Slept fitfully in Burberry and blanket. Rained some.
Came back at 5.30.
